Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) says it has agreed with MultiChoice Africa Holdings to resume Digital Satellite Television (DStv) services in the country this Friday.

Macra said in a statement signed by its director-general Daudi Suleman that the two parties met on Monday in Lilongwe and agreed that the service should resume.

Suleman: We have reached an agreement

He said: “On 4th September 2023 the parties met in Lilongwe and reached an agreement and understanding.”

Suleman further assured the public that the matter would be resolved in a manner that balances the interests of both parties and within the boundaries of the applicable law.

The development comes barely a week after Minister of Information and Digitisation Moses Kunkuyu ordered Macra to vacate an injunction it obtained against MultiChoice Malawi to effect price adjustments and give dialogue a chance.

Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) earlier urged Macra and MultiChoice Malawi to reolve the issue.

Cama executive director John Kapito said the dispute was having a negative effect on a certain sector of consumers which includes institutions such as hotels, among others.

The fall-out between Macra and Multichoice Africa Holdings saw the latter on August 8 2023 announcing the withdrawal of DStv services.

The decision came after the High Court of Malawi in Lilongwe issued an injunction in a matter between MultiChoice Malawi and Macra on the adjustment of DStv premiums.

Macra accused the service provider of flouting the law by not informing it about the review.
