Kumwenda: We expect to see tremendous improvement

Malawi Handball Association (Maha) general secretary Dennis Kumwenda is today expected to fly to Doha, Qatar to attend a International Handball Federation (IHF) Congress at the weekend.

Kumwenda, whose airticket and accommodation have been sponsored by the IHF, said at the congress, they will lobby for at least two standard handball pitches and also use the occasion to strengthen their relationships with other handball playing countries by arranging exchange programmes.

This will also be the moment when Maha will know whether IHF will start providing them annual grants for administration. Currently, Maha relies on funding from the government, through Sports Council.

“This is our chance to lobby for the development of the sport in the country.

“After this congress, we expect to see tremendous improvement of our beloved sport on the local scene,” said Kumwenda.

Since Maha was established in 2009, Malawi national teams have contested in two Africa Zone Challenge Trophies where they performed well despite shoddy preparations on the improvised pitches.

This will be the second time for Maha to attend the IHF congress after the one held in Cairo, Egypt in 2009.
