The Department of Civil Aviation has given Malawi Government until Sunday to pay them K20 million (about $50 000) allowances incurred during the 33rd Sadc Summit failing which the “next course of action will likely affect airline operators”.

The Civil Aviation Union (CAU) has since written government through the Chief Secretary to the Government.

CAU general secretary and spokesperson Ted Chunga confirmed the grievances in an interview on Wednesday.

“It is necessary to put it on record that our demands are long overdue taking into consideration that the Police, Immigration, Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, Health, among others have been paid,” reads part of the letter.

“We demand that members of staff for the Department of Civil Aviation be paid their rightful allowances at a minimum rate of K6 000 (about $15) per day commencing from August 7, the day delegates started arriving to August 19 2013 the day Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC] President Joseph Kabila left the country back to DRC,” Chunga said.

The department has a workforce of 204.
