Malawi aware of need for new markets

Malawi’s Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Grace Maseko says her Ministry is aware of the need to construct new markets across the country.

The minister said this in Parliament when she was responding to questions from Member of Parliament for Mwanza West Paul Chibingu and Blantyre Kabula MP Felix Njawala who asked the minister to consider constructing new markets in their constituencies.

“In Mwanza, I can assure you that Mwanza District Council has plans to construct a market at Thambani Trading Centre. When funds are available the market would be constructed,” said Maseko.

The minister said once funds are available, Mbayani and Chirimba markets which are in Blantyre Kabula would be constructed as the areas have already been targeted.

On concerns, that there are no good markets Lilongwe District, the minister said she was aware and knows that Area 23, 24 and others are in need of new markets.

“We are also going to rehabilitate some markets that are in bad conditions,” explained Maseko.—Mana
