Malawi face Germany in Cricket Nations opener

Malawi Cricket National Team will tomorrow start its Quad Nations T20 Cup with a clash against Germany at TCA Oval in Blantyre.

Cricket Malawi has organised the nine-day international tournament to honour the body’s fallen operations director Arjun Menon, who died a few weeks ago after being attacked by thugs at his residence in Nancholi Township, Blantyre.

Apart from the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) 53rd-ranked Malawi and 35th-ranked Germany, the competition also includes Bahrain and Tanzania, who are ranked 26 and 34, respectively.

Malawi Cricket National Team captain Donnex Kansonkho said although they are facing a side ranked 18 places higher than them, they will do their best to register victory as a deserving tribute to the late Menon.

“The late Menon inculcated a fighting spirit in us and we must win to honour his contribution to the development of Malawi cricket. We are ready for battle,” he said.

Cricket Malawi president Vivek Ganesan said the competition will be played in double round robin format with the top-two teams qualifying for the final on July 13.

He said the Malawi versus Germany match will be played from 9:30 am before leaving the stage for a tussle between Bahrain and Tanzania at 1:45 pm.

“This competition marks a major milestone for cricket in Malawi as it brings world-class competition to local fans and honours the legacy of the late Menon, whose contribution to the sport in Malawi was instrumental,” said Ganesan.

Malawi’s next fixture will be against Tanzania on Sunday at 9:30am. They will aso entertain Bahrain next Monday at 1:45 pm, Tanzania again next Wednesday at 9:30 am, Germany next Thursday at 1:45 pm and Bahrain the other Saturday at 9:30 am.

Cricket lovers will be required to pay K10 000 to watch two games per day while children will pay half the price. VIP access is at K25 000.
