Malawi on Friday demonstrated its efforts in combating the adverse effects of climate change, and how it is reducing emissions of greenhouse gases at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland.

At the event, which was highly patronised by delegates to the two-week UN Climate Change Conference which ended Saturday, Malawi showcased its policy framework and the National Climate Change Programme and Investment Priorities.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Management Halima Daud said Malawi has developed a National Climate Change Policy aimed at guiding effective management of climate change issues in the country.

The priorities in the policy, Daud said, include adaptation, mitigation, research, technology development and transfer, capacity building and gender as a cross-cutting issue.

“Government envisages that the National Climate Change Policy will enhance effective planning, development and coordination of climate change programmes and financing of various activities in the country.

“In line with the National Climate Change Policy, the Malawi Government has developed a National Climate Change investment plan whose overall goal is to address the current and future adverse impacts of climate change and extreme weather events,” she added.

Director of Environment Aloysius Kamperewera made a presentation on climate change management: A Pathway for Sustainable Development in Malawi.

He said given Malawi’s high vulnerability to impact of climate change, significant national efforts are needed to address the drivers of climate change and the vulnerable communities that suffer from the effects.
