Fear has gripped Blantyre’s Ndirande Township after a man working for an international departmental store was on Wednesday brutally hacked to death with pangas.

The deceased, identified as Aubrey Kamzati, 40, from Thondoyo Village in Traditional Authority Chakhumbira in Ntcheu, was returning from meeting his girlfriend in the township when he met his fate.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa yesterday identified the girlfriend as Caroline Mtengowamowa, who has since been arrested.

Explaining the ordeal, Gondwa said on the fateful day Kamzati went to Mtengowamowa’s house after knocking off. The lady was a former wife of Saidi Nangwale Mankhokwe, 32, from Msila Village in Mozambique.

Said Gondwa: “On his [Kamzati’s] return to board his vehicle, Mankhokwe, accompanied by three other men, [allegedly] grabbed and hacked him with pangas. He bled profusely, collapsed and died upon arrival at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.”

He said the suspects went into hiding and police are still looking for them.

Sources said Mtengowamowa used to work for a cleaning firm at the shop where Kamzati was a stock controller. She reportedly stopped working in March this year.
