People in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimutu in Lilongwe District have commended the district council for constructing a new maternity wing at Chiwamba Health Centre.

The K50 million wing replaces the old maternity ward that had one delivery bed. The new facility has five beds.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, a pregnant woman Emilida Petulo said the new maternity wing will improve healthcare services at the health centre.

She said it was difficult previously, for pregnant women to get assisted when the facility had only one delivery bed.

“Due to the delay in getting assistance, some pregnant women ended up getting services from traditional birth attendants, which put their lives in danger,” said Petulo.

She urged pregnant women to deliver at the facility.

Chiwamba Health Centre medical assistant Madalitso Vani said the wing has improved maternal healthcare in the area.

He said the new facility has made more women

to access quality maternal health care.

Said Vani: “The old maternity wing had one maternity bed which made it difficult to serve more people at once, but now there are five delivery beds and other advanced medical equipment.

“We are already experiencing an increase in the number of women seeking maternal healthcare.”

Lilongwe District Council director of public works Sydney Chiphaka said they used funds from the District Development Fund to construct the maternity wing
