In his 12-track album released June this year, Ukhale Tcheru, Maulidi Kumbalika known as Mau K has captured the hearts of many gospel lovers in the country with his song Ukhale Tcheru. The song is one of those songs enjoying air play in most of the radio stations in Malawi.

The song acts as an advisory agent to believers telling them to keep watch as we are approaching the end of time for no one knows the day when the Lord shall come.

The song gives hope and strength to listeners. The singing style itself makes one have that belief that he/she has already been served.

On the other hand before Mau, came Allan Chirwa who does the same singing style. Today, all the yelling which was known and done by Chirwa is also being done by Mau. Currently Chirwa has two albums one of which is called Kufanana Naye.

Listening to Mau k’s Ukhale Tcheru at a glance, one might think that it is Allan singing because the song sounds just like Allan Chirwa’s  Kufanana Naye if you only hear the yelling part.

Much as it is no crime to sing in any way that pleases the artist, it gives credit to an artist who emerges and sticks to his/her original touch.

However, listening to both Chirwa and Mau K, one would think that it is the South African S’sifo Newane singing. On that pace, should we say the two music stars share the same icon as a role model or is it a syndrome of copying singing styles among artists? Rather should we say our artists are lacking creativity?
