This and That

Memories and memoirs

Jah people, welcome to Sunday, April 14 2013.

At the renamed French Cultural Centre now Blantyre Cultural Centre, pilgrims pay homage to Ethel Kamwendo-Banda and other gospel stars eclipsed by looted buildings that are falling apart. The ruins cost government K300 million (about $750 000) two years ago, but now offer entertainment at owner’s risk!

I wonder what happened to the K200 million (about $500 000) Parliament approved for the renovation of the art’s mecca. Will the Ministry of Tourism and Culture give up the unused millions as they recently did with funds meant for construction of a first museum in Lilongwe?

Sad, the ministry responsible for creative minds keeps working in slow motion and repeating system errors like a scratched CD.

Family members congratulate Ken Zikhale Ng’oma for obtaining “a PhD with capital D on his distinction” not this year or last year—but in 2011.

Somebody must offer our two-year-old doctor a politically correct job befitting his newest qualification. Certainly, he is no longer the same Zikhale Promotions chief who made Lunzu Townhouse a popular entertainment venue or the jolly fellow who used to host Kanda Bongoman and other kwasa kwasa acts when Democratic Republic of Congo was Zaire.

Zikhale! Power!

Madonna-JB spat

So Madonna’s well-oiled public relations machine has crushed President Joyce Banda’s confrontational ensemble into submission over a clarification on the difference between building a school and a classroom block?

Now that JB denies signing press statements accusing the Material Girl diva of bullying and demanding red-carpet treatment, can somebody tell Malawians how many more falsities we have received in Her Excellency’s name.

As somebody suspected of authoring a resignation letter bearing the president’s signature languishes in prison, there is no need to dangle a K2 million (about $5 000) reward to trace whoever fashioned her anti-Madonna ‘litter’.

Crisis management requires the president to keep her PR band in check to avoid being portrayed as an ungrateful dictator using an elected office to avenge the dismissal her sister Anjimile Oponyo suffered under Madonna’s Raising Malawi charity. It was a PR mess.
