Minister hints at security of votes
Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma has encouraged voters in Lilongwe to turn up in large numbers on polling day, Sepetember 16 2025 promising that his ministry will ensure that their votes count and are safe.
Addressing a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rally on Sunday at Chowo Primary School ground in Lilongwe East Constituency, he said recent elections have seen increasing voter apathy due to rumours of rigging.
“We know that many people don’t vote because they feel their vote won’t change anything knowing that there is a trend of rigging.
“But this time around, the security is in my office and I can assure you that there will be no chance of rigging,” he said.
The voting pattern for the last two tripartite elections indicate that in 2019, there were 6 859 570 registered voters but only 5 105 983 voted while in 2014, a total of 7 470 806 people registered but only 5 285 278 cast their vote giving an apathy of 2 185 528.
Ching’oma attributed such levels of apathy to lack of confidence that the election results would reflect the will of the people.
Former MCP secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka urged people to desist from violence, saying if a political party focuses on violence, it wastes campaign time which would have been used to outline its development agenda.
