Ministry firm on raw minerals export ban

Ministry of Energy and Mining has reaffirmed its position on the temporary ban on exports of raw minerals, saying the policy is aimed at promoting local value addition and boosting the country’s economy.

Minister of Energy and Mining Jean Mathanga, speaking during a familiarisation tour of Shayona Cement Corporation Limited factory in Kasungu Dsitrict on Thursday,  said government wants all minerals to be processed locally before being exported to create value, jobs and generate foreign exchange.

She said the policy seeks to ensure that the mining sector, which currently contributes roughly one percent to the gross domestic product, fully contributes to the country’s economic growth.

Mathanga said companies such as Shayona Cement demonstrate the benefits of value addition, observing that local production helps to reduce reliance on imports and save forex.

“We must work closely with investors and listen to their challenges so that their operations are not disrupted,” she said.

Shayona Cement Corporation Limited human resources and administration manager Austin Mvula said the company supports government’s policy on local value addition in the mining sector.

“We support the policy, but the local market must be protected from illegal cement imports,” he said.

Mvula said companies that import cement should do so legally to ensure fair competition and protect local manufacturers.

He cited inadequate electricity supply as a key operational challenge, saying Shayona Cement Company currently receives about half of its required power.

Kasungu District Council chairperson Nephtali Chikwanda commended Shayona Cement for its contribution to both district and national development.

He said the company plays an important role in job creation and local economic growth.

Shayona Cement Corporation produces at least 40 000 bags of cement per day, with most of the product supplied to the local market.
