Ministry hails gas plant project at Karonga Hospital
Deputy Minister of Health Noah Chimpeni says the construction of a gas plant at Karonga District Hospital will enhance service delivery at the facility.
The deputy minister inspected the project on Monday, which he said once completed, will serve other hospitals in the region.
Said Chimpeni: “However, I urge the contractor to finish construction works within the prescribed 120 days without compromising quality and standards. We do not want substandard structures.

“I also ask Karonga District Council to paint the hospital.”
Karonga District Council chairperson Bellium Msukwa said the World Bank-funded project will improve service delivery at the facility.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, the district and the region lost precious lives due to lack of oxygen. However, with this plant, we will be able to produce our own oxygen,” he said.
Karonga district director of health services David Sibale said the council spends K1.6 million to go to Nkhoma Mission Hospital in Lilongwe to fill 40 oxygen gas cylinders which lasts three months.
Mable Mwenitete, who survived Covid-19 in 2020, commended the council for the initiative.
“We need to have such facilities within the district to save people’s lives during critical situations,” she said.
The World Bank has pumped in K1. 8 billion for the construction and subsequent purchase of the gas plant equipment
