Lilongwe City to plant mibawa trees along Kenyatta Road

Lilongwe City Council has started restoring mibawa (mahogany) trees that were removed along Kenyatta Road following its expansion to six lanes.

The move comes after an outcry from the public and conservationists in 2021 when the council cut the trees to pave the way for construction works.

In an interview during the tree planting exercise on Saturday, Lilongwe City Council environmental officer Cedric Tambala said they have always had plans to replant the trees and restore the city’s beauty.

He said C. Steinweg Bridge, a company specialising in warehousing and logistics, has donated 3 000 tree seedlings towards the initiative.

“All along, it was in our plans to replace the mibawa trees that we removed two years ago. We are grateful to C. Steinweg Bridge for donating 3 000 mibawa seedlings towards this venture,” said Tambala.

On his part, C. Steinweg Bridge environmental health and safety specialist Wamaka Neba said they decided to work with the city council because they believe that a good environment is the foundation of a thriving economy.

He said: “One of the key pillars of the country’s long-term development strategy, Malawi 2063, is sustainable development and this tree planting exercise aligns well with that goal.

“By planting trees we are not only fighting deforestation, but we are also contributing to the fight against climate change and ensuring a healthier future for future generations
