World Vision promotes goat farming in Kasungu
World Vision Malawi has underscored the importance of empowering vulnerable communities with assets such as livestock to build their resilience against poverty.
Speaking on Monday during a goat distribution exercise in group village head Mphampha, Traditional Authority Chulu in Kasungu District, World Vision director of operations Charles Chimombo said the initiative sought to improve people’s livelihood.

He said: “We have distributed 685 goats to 137 families. The project will distribute 13 000 goats to 2 000 families. Each family will get five goats on a pass-on basis.
“Mutchenda Animal Gift Catalog seeks to help people in mindset change and appreciate the importance of livestock farming to improve food and nutrition status as well as generate income.”
In his remarks, Chulu Area Development chairperson Jacob Kawaza commended World Vision for the project.
He said beneficiaries will be able to generate income to buy basic items for their families and pay school fees for their children.
“Some people will use manure in their gardens to improve their crop yield, thereby enhancing food security,” said Kawaza.
He urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the goats as they will be expected to pass them over to the next cohort of beneficiaries.
One of the beneficiaries, Davison Phiri, said goats were important assets that have the potential to empower communities economically.
“What we needed was this initiative to take us out of poverty. For many years, we have struggled to make ends meet because we do not have income-generating activities,” he said.
The Mutchenda Animal Gift Catalog is a three-year project which started in 2024 and is expected to end in 2026.
The organisation has so far distributed 2 065 goats to 413 families
