Ministry pledges potable water to Misuku, Chitipa
Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Liana Chapota Kakhobwe has assured people of Misuku in Chitipa District of government’s commitment towards enhancing access to potable water in the area.
She said this on Saturday in response to a request that Chitipa East legislator Kezzie Msukwa (Malawi Congress Party) made during a rally at Misuku Primary School.
Msukwa asked the ministry to expand the Misuku Gravity Water Supply Scheme to reach more people.
He said as the population of Misuku was growing due to the area’s urbanisation, chances of people getting water from unprotected sources were high.
Chapota Kakhobwe acknowledged the concern and said it was within the ministry’s mandate to reach out to every Malawian with potable water.
She said: “We will ensure that we use every possible means to provide potable water to people of Misuku because I have heard that there are many rivers where we can tap water from.
“President Lazarus Chakwera’s vision is that no one should be left out as far as clean water supply is concerned. So, this is noted.”
Chapota Kakhobwe said her ministry will reach out to development partners to help finance the water supply project in the area.
In random interviews with people from Misuku, they said they welcomed the initiative.
Jonathan Mufungwe, a businessperson, said they need potable water urgently.
“We support the idea of extending the water project to more people because we need clean water,” he said
