Miss Plus Size pre-party comes to BT

Who said big is not beautiful? Well, the response was delivered on Saturday at HS Winehouse in Namiwawa, Blantyre during the Miss Pus Size pre-party.

Displaying utter confidence, self-belief and pride in their bodies and beauty, six plus size models strutted on the catwalk much to the delight of the patrons.

Initially, the organisers had planned for eight models, but only Mable Chisaka, Halima Bangara, Thandiwe Phiri, Tiyamike Gwedemula, Nellie Kaunda and Alinafe Tsilizeni showed up as the other two were reportedly tied up with academic engagements.

The six paraded in casual, dinner and traditional wear categories and the resounding reaction they received every moment they appeared on stage was a manifestation of how people appreciate beauty in its fuller state.

Although not highly publicised, the event attracted a reasonable patronage. And considering that it was taking place side by side with the highly fancied European Champions League final game, the organisers had reasons to walk tall.

While it also provided a unique excitement, lead organiser Prince Chokotho admitted that there are a few ends that need to be tied up to deliver a wholesome event.

“The lapses in between the sets was a big problem. We needed to arrange for some artist who would have completed the linkage between the parades so that the patrons are not left with a bare field,” he said.

Chokotho, however, said he was encouraged by the response received as it has offered them a push as they set to go into the competitive stages of the event.

This was the second event in a three-series schedule. The first happened early this month at Epic Lounge in Lilongwe and the final one will take place in Mzuzu. The events are a precursor of the Miss Plus Size Malawi national beauty pageant.

Through the contest, Miss Plus Size Malawi Jnr, Miss Plus Size Malawi Snr and Miss Plus Size Malawi Extra will be selected from the three regions. The top five winners from each region will qualify for a national contest.

The winners of the three contests will then represent Malawi at different Miss Plus Size international contests, according to Chokotho.

The event on Saturday was preceded by a music performance by Waliko Makhala who entertained patrons with his bush music touch.
