Malawi Posts Corporation (MPC) says it is remaining with one witness in a case in which former MPC acting postmaster general Zachaeus Meke is challenging his dismissal by the corporation’s board.

MPC through its lawyer Tamandani Kadyampakeni told the Industrial Relations Court (IRC) in Blantyre yesterday that the corporation lined-up four witnesses for the case and that it is remaining with MPC property controller Uze Tingo Kanyama as the last witness.

The court convened to continue hearing the matter where former MPC board’s appointment and disciplinary committee chairperson Violet Jumbe testified in the case.

In her testimony, she among others indicated that MPC board resolved to dismiss Meke from his position as acting postmaster general.

Said Jumbe: “The board was a complainant, and some members who made the recommendations were also witnesses in the audit that led to his dismissal.”

She further told the court that no one of the board members filed any notice of conflict of interest in Meke’s investigations.

But Meke, through his lawyer Bob Chimkango, asked during cross-examination why his dismissal letter indicates that he was dismissed from the position of deputy director of courier, which was his substantive post and not acting postmaster general.

After hearing the matter, IRC chairperson Austin Msowoya, who is presiding the case, adjourned the matter to November 13 2023 when MPC is expected to parade its final witness.

MPC board fired Meke for allegedly mismanaging funds generated from the sale of the institution’s building in Zomba.

He  was dismissed in November 2021.
