Hutchson Mthinda won his major golf tournament on Saturday at the Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) when he beat a field of 69 golfers to be crowned First Merchant Bank (FMB) Golf champion.

The competition, which was played in Pay Bogey format, saw Mthinda beat Duncain Chadzakufa and Brian Coombs to carry the day.

For his feat, FMB gave Mthinda a golf bag.

“This is great as it is the first time for me to win a golf competetion. It’s overwhelming and satisfying. I dedicate this win to my wife who has been very supportive. I thank LGC for the organisation and FMB for the sponsorship and the prizes,” he said.

It was also a great day for Eliza Tench who retuned to winning ways after two years of trophy drought.

She was crowned FMB ladies champion. She also got a golf bag as her prize.

“The last time I won a major competition was in 2010. I won the TNM Open Winner of Winners Trophy.

“I struggled for the past two years to get back my swing. I dedicate this win to my husband who was here with me, encouraging to me to do my best. I guess this is the beginning of better things for me,” said Tench who started playing golf seven years ago.

FMB regional corporate manager responsible for Central and Northern regions Joseph Chavula said he was happy that the tournament was a success.

“It is satisfying that we have managed to organise a full-fledged competition. In the past, we used to sponsor ballpool only. I promise you more golf this year. We’ll be back here in September. But before that, we’ll have tournaments in Mulanje, Blantyre and Mzuzu,” he said.

“There were many events today in Lilongwe and to have this field of golfers, we do really appreciate and do not take it for granted,” he added.
