Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has urged Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) final year engineering students to bring solutions to curb increased water challenges in the country’s cities and towns.

BWB director of distribution and commerce Verson Kafodya gave the advice in Blantyre on Friday when he presided over the 2022 Faculty of Engineering final year students’ symposium.

He said: “The city is growing and we need to meet the demand. We are planning to come up with rural water source project, an independent solar power plant at Walkers Ferry, pipe replacement project and rehabilitation of some water treatment plants.

“All these projects will need human capital and the engineers about to graduate will form a pool of skilled labour that will be utilised during the projects.”

In his remarks, patron for this year’s engineering sympsium associate professor Burnet Mkandawire said the symposium enables students to showcase the skills acquired during five years at the university and meet potential employers.

“We hope that when they enter the industry, they will help to take the country to another level,” he said.

One of the students, Grace Bwanali, who is studying biomedical engineering, said they are equipped to put engineering skills into practice.

“The industry should expect that we will bring innovations and solutions that will make a difference in society,” she said.
