Mubas six-storey hostel construction to start April

Construction of 600-capacity modern hostels for Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) students in Blantyre is expected to start in April this year, it has emerged.

Mubas Vice-Chancellor Associate Professor Nancy Chitera disclosed on Monday in Blantyre during an orientation of over 3 000 new students who have enrolled for various programmes in the 2025 academic year.

She said the institution has embarked on the hostel construction project as one way of mitigating accommodation challenges the students have been experiencing over the years.

“This is a six-storey building and it is going to take around 600 students. The designs are all ready, we have also advertised and the contractor will be on the ground by 1st April 2025,” explained Chitera.

She further stated that negotiations with the World Bank are at an advanced stage on the designs for a 5 000-capacity hostel.

“So, this particular hostel will be built on our land at Poly Alley and also the land that we have beyond the [MTL] Malawi Telecommunications Limited,” said Chitera.

She expressed optimism that upon completion of the two hostel projects, accommodation challenges at the institution will be history.

Currently, thousands of Mubas students reside in privately rented hostels and houses in various locations of Blantyre City due to shortage of space in institutional hostels.

Addressing the newly enrolled students, Chitera said Mubas remains undeterred towards its vision of being a university that aspires to produce influential, entrepreneurial, and innovative graduates who can drive the pace of transformation locally and globally.

In total, the Vice-Chancellor said 3 176 new students have been enrolled to pursue 101 different undergraduate programmes. Mubas has a student population of over 11 000.

One of the newly enrolled students, Alex Chiwiya, who will be pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Journalism thanked Mubas management for the week-long orientation session, saying it will help him prepare for university life.
