Mubas strives for financial independence

Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) says it it has put in place strategies to help attain financial independence over the next decade.

In an interview during the disbursement of K287 million internal research funds to some staff on Friday, Mubas Vice-Chancellor Associate Professor Nancy Chitera said the university has put in place strategies to ensure that it is research intensive, entrepreneurial and innovative.

She said the university’s plan is to standalone in terms of funding and reduce reliance on government subvention.

Said Chitera: “We want a university that is self-sustainable. It’s not that we are divorcing ourselves, we will continue to be a public university, but we will not have to depend on subvention.

“We want to be recognised internationally and be known as an entrepreneurial university. So, we want to produce a graduate that would drive the pace of the transformation here in Malawi and outside the country.”

She said the research grants to its staff will also help the higher learning institution to produce and have a good number of professors and the lecturers to improve the university ranking.

In a separate interview, Mubas head of quality assurance department Adamson Thengolose, who is leading Mathematical Sciences Department research team, said his team’s research will look at the optimization of traffic control in the country.
