Transporters lose K200m cargo to theft

Transporters Association of Malawi (TAM) says it has lost over K200 million worth of cargo, mainly wheat, fertiliser and polythene, due to an alleged theft syndicate targeting cargo from Beira in Mozambique to various places in Malawi.

In a letter to Inspector General of Police Meryline Yolamu dated April 25 2025, TAM director and spokesperson Frank Banda said certain truck drivers, while en-route with high-value cargo engage in a scheme involving the removal of legitimate cargo from sealed bags and replacing it with sand.

He said this is done in such a manner that the total weight of the cargo remains consistent with shipping documents, enabling the vehicle to pass undetected through weighbridges.

Said Banda: “Notably, when drivers are confronted, they either abscond or refuse to disclose information about the destinations or buyers of the diverted cargo.

“This issue is gravely affecting our industry as it erodes the trust of our clients and results in the loss of business for honest transporters.”

According to Banda, some of these cases have already been lodged with Area 25 Police Station, where investigations were apparently ongoing under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

“Our concern is that some of these cases are taking too long to conclude as they date back to the year 2024.

“As a result, transporters are left bearing the financial burden of compensating the cargo owners, while the perpetrators escape accountability,” added Banda.

National police spokesperson Peter Kalaya has acknowledged receipt of the letter and that they will invite the TAM leadership for discussions.

“We will formally respond and invite them to a meeting because the contents of the letter show that they know a lot about what is happening, which can also help us during investigations,” he said.
