Senior Chief Mthiramanja of Mulanje has called on community members to stop vandalising public infrastructure whenever there are disagreements in their communities.

The chief said this on Saturday during the handover of Chikuli Police Unit by Deputy Minister of Local Government Halima Daudi.

He said: “A peaceful environment is one that sees development and puts it to better use.

“I don’t want to hear of cases or see anyone from this area coming here to destroy this police unit if there will be a disagreement here. This police unit has been handed over to us as a result of the need that we had in this area.”

Mthiramanja said that the community had for a long time looked forward to a police unit to enforce security in the area.

Daudi asked community members to report all cases of abuse as the police unit was within their vicinity.

“This is your police unit and you will no longer be required to travel long distances to report the different issues that you are experiencing in your areas,” she said.

Mulanje South West legislator George Chaponda said he was impressed with the period taken to complete the project.

He said the police unit would assist in the development of the area as different partners will come in with different programmes due to the security in the area.

Chikuli Police Unit has been funded by District Development Fund to the tune K50 million.
