Muslim youths in the country have been advised to be good and responsible citizens of the country.

The remarks were made last Sunday at a get-together organised by the International College of Business Management (ICBM) in conjunction with Soche Technical College Muslim Students Association.

The function, which took place at Soche Technical College, was organised under the theme What role are you playing as the Muslim youth?

Speaking after the function, chairperson of ICBM Muslim Students Association Shams Stambuli said the students need to know their responsibilities.

“Muslim youths need to acquire knowledge both Islamic and secular. This will help them to manage their everyday lives,” said Stambuli.

His counterpart, Shaffie Awamie of Soche Technical College, said there is no benefit in rushing after money at the expense of education.

“Muslim youth should stop rushing after passports to go to South Africa. They are responsible for moulding their future by going to school, not South Africa,” said Awamie.

The youths commended organisations that are sponsoring Muslim young people to go to school.

“We would like to thank organisations such as the African Development Education Fund (ADEF) and Islamic Zakaat Fund (IZF) for their efforts in helping Muslim youths from poor families to access education. However, we ask the organisations to think about other districts as well instead of concentrating on the lakeshore region.

“There are also intelligent Muslim youths in districts such as Phalombe, Nsanje, Chitipa, Karonga and Ntchisi,” said Stambuli.

Stambuli also reminded Muslim youths to exercise their democratic right by voting in the 2014 Tripartite Elections.
