Malawi Queens netball star Mwawi Kumwenda yesterday helped Australian club Melbourne Vixens clinch the Suncorp Super Netball minor premiership after inspiring them to a 61-53 victory over local rivals Collingwood Magpies.

This 10th triumph in 12 games also means Vixens have cemented their stand at the summit of Suncorp Super Netball League.

Mwawi in action for Vixens

A match report on Suncorp Super Netball League website explained that Mwawi played a pivotal role in ensuring Vixens secure the victory at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

“Melbourne found some momentum after Caitlin Thwaites and Mwai Kumwenda combined for three Super Shots in the first Power Five period, clicking into gear in the second quarter to outscore the Magpies 18-9,” the report reads.

Kumwenda, who claimed the Nissan player-of-the-match accolade in the previous match, yesterday said she is happy that her team continues to maintain a winning streak.

“It was a tough game but I was very happy to see my teammates working hard up to the end. It is important that we continue to do it as a team. Overall,  I am happy that we got the win.

I am proud of the girls,” she said.

The match saw Collingwood lead the first quarter 17-12 before Melbourne came from behind to lead 26-30 by halftime break.
