Mzava speaks out on staying two seasons unattached

Idle Flames captain Limbikani Mzava has spoken out on his spending almost two seasons now without a club, saying he has not given up playing football.

The former AmaZulu captain in two weeks clocks two seasons unattached to a club.

Mzava’s last action at AmaZulu was on September 25 2021 when he was brought in for the last 10 minutes against Baroka in DStv Premierhsip.

His last Malawi national team match was a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe on January 14 2022 in the Group Stage of Afcon finals in Cameroon.

His unavailability has resulted in uncertainty and Flames coaches have opted not to promote vice-captain John CJ Banda who has been leading the team for close to two years now.

Mzava: I can’t give up hope

But the centre back, who trained with SuperSport United and Cape Town City last season, told South Africa’s online publication kickoff.com that he remains optimistic of playing again.

“I was hoping that I would be in a team by now but I’m not. My hope was that I would start with one of the teams for pre-season training and did engage one coach with a possibility of joining his team.

“However, in the end, nothing happened because he is no longer at that club. So, I didn’t pursue that option any further and so far, I haven’t had a team coming for me.”

Mzava also revealed that he received some offers from Asia, but he is weighting the options.

“The opportunities that I now have are in Asia, but the offers have not been enticing enough for me to leave which is why I have chosen to look here in South Africa.

“I have my family here so I don’t want to go far if the offer is not good. That is my football situation for now and I haven’t given up because I’m still hopeful that something will come up. I can’t give up on football. I remain in football up to now,”

The centre-back started his career at Azam Tigers but his first South African club, Bloemfontein Celtic, signed him in 2011 from defunct TNM Super League outfit Escom United.

He spent four seasons at Celtic before a season-long stint with Mpumalanga Black in 2015/16 season.

In 2016 he moved to Lamontville Golden Arrows where he spent three seasons.

He then spent a season at Highlands Park before joining AmaZulu in 2020.
