Health officials have asked M’mbelwa District Council to allocate Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for the construction of a guardian shelter bathrooms and toilets at Mzimba District Hospital.

About 80 guardians at the hospital, which serves nearly 608 000 Malawians in Mzimba South, sleep in a two-room structure which is dilapidated, congested and unhygienic.

The council’s Health and Environment Committee recommended the use of CDF, district health officer Lumbani Munthali said.

“We presented our proposal at the full council meeting in July because the situation is getting out of hand. A toilet constructed just last year got filled up in no time due to congestion,” he said.

His office has already identified land for the new guardian shelter, but funds are not available.

District commissioner Thomas Chirwa said the matter was in the hands of legislators who authorise CDF expenditures.

“The shelter is expected to cost K40 million while four members of Parliament will contribute K24 million from CDF. The council will offer a K16 million top-up,” he said.

Chirwa said a special committee will oversee the project for transparency and accountability. n
