Residents of Mzimba district in the Northern Region are living in fear following the brutal murder of two people at Manyamula Trading Centre  by unknown assailants.

Both Manyamula ward councillor Kefasi Chisi and Mzimba Police station spokesperson Peter Botha confirmed in a separate interview yesterday the murder of the two people at Manyamula.

The deceased, identified as  Daniel Mtonga, 32,  of Gwera Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chindi  and Yotam Nyirenda, 35, of  Zebediya Village, T/A M’mbelwa, were found with deep cuts in the head.

Chisi said people are living in fear.

Botha: We are hunting for the suspects

“The challenge is that the assailants are at large and can return any time to hit again. We appreciate efforts by the police, but until the suspects are caught, communities will be living in fear,” he said.

Botha said the two were killed in separate incidents—one on Saturday and the other on Sunday.

Mtonga, who was dumped in the bush after being killed, is said to have left his home two weeks ago to do some carpentry work at Chamnguma in the district and was attacked on his way back, according to police.

“On the other hand, Nyirenda was reportedly attacked on his way back from a drinking joint,” said Botha.

He said police are investigating the matter.

The district has recorded 17 murder cases since January this year against 13 recorded last year during the corresponding period, according to police.
