He said: “This is what we are calling a golf revival in Mzuzu because we have been dormant for almost three years now.

“When I became president of the golf club,  this was one of my objectives,  to revive golf.”

On his part, Mzuzu Golf Club captain Chrispin Mphande said he was pleased with the interest shown by members to learn and play golf  following the reopening of the course.

“We are planning to hold these social golf tournaments every weekend and in so doing, they will improve their skills,” he said.

Meanwhile, the club is also facing an encroachment challenge as youths from surrounding communities are using part of the golf course it as their playground despite a perimeter fence being erected on one side of the golf course.

But Chazema said they have already started discussions with the youth to find an alternative ground and the club will be assisting them with footballs.

“There is a lot of encroachment, so it is our plan to complete the perimeter fence while at the same time engaging young boys and girls, who have been using the golf course, to find alternative playgrounds,” he said.

Mphande won the social tournament after accumulating 20 points while Sungani Nkhonjera came second with 16 points. Rodgers Chiume was third with 15points.
