Nana’s Closet in drive for sustainable fashion

Fashion is accused of being an enemy of environment and wildlife as some designs use fur, animal skin or large volumes of fabrics.

But local fashion designer Alinafe Mapwesera, popularly known as Nana’s Closet, wanted to make sure that she also takes care of the world around her.

“After a few years in fashion, I found myself having great passion for sustainable fashion. I wanted to become a fashion designer with purpose and take care of the environment while at it,” she said.

Mapwesera said she enrolled with London College of Style in the United Kingdom for a course in sustainable fashion.

“From the knowledge gained, I learnt more about circular fashion, in which products and materials are kept in use for a long time. I also learnt about ethical fashion which aims at reducing the negative impact of fashion on people, animals and the planet,” she said.

Mapwesera then launched Zero Waste Campaign which saw her use left over materials to make children’s dresses.

“I managed to make 100 dresses from waste material that was either going to be burned or go towards landfills. We made the dresses and donated them,” she said.

Nana’s Closet donated the 100 dresses to children in need at Mercy James Hospital and an orphanage in Ndirande Township, Blantyre.

“I realised I am where I am because of the people that work for me and make our material and the planet which is the source of all our materials.

“So, we need to take care of the planet; hence, zero waste campaign. I also need to give back to the community and the people through donating the items made from the campaign,” she said.

Mapwesera said seeing the smile on the children’s faces brought joy and satisfaction to her.

“I am particularly happy that we were able to protect the environment while helping out. Most of the zigamba [loose cut offs] end up in water streams polluting the water, so how about putting them to better use?” she added.

The London School of Style offers courses in fashion styling, make up, photography and colour analysis, among others.

“Founded by successful industry personalities Wendy Elsmore and Dan Blake, the school’s training method is a powerful alternative to traditional education, one that champions individuality and develops greatness in all,” reads part of the school’s mission statement.

Nana’s Closet is a local fashion brand that specialises in wedding dresses and outfits for bridal parties.
