In an interview, Mpondaminga said the troupe’s role goes beyond just performances abroad.

“The troupe was established to represent Malawi internationally and has been key in promoting the country’s culture and heritage,” he said.

Mpondaminga  added that the group has succeeded in that regard and has even contributed significantly to promoting tourism.

“Although not specifically programmed for tourism promotion, the troupe has also played a big role by performing in various countries, helping people around the world get to know Malawi,” he said.

Mpondaminga said that the exposure brought by the troupe opened doors for Malawi on the international cultural map, contributing to recognition and appreciation of the country’s rich traditions.

Department of Arts acting choreographer and cultural standards officer James Thole, who is leading the delegation, highlighted the importance of the upcoming trip, especially for the newly recruited members.

“This is a great chance for the new dancers to improve their skills and presentation as artists on an international stage,” he said.

Thole said for the artists the platform not only allows them to build confidence in the acquired talent, but also allows  to appreciate other cultures.

Thole said while the dance troupe has performed in other countries lately there has not been frequent exchanges locally where other groups have been invited to perform in Malawi.

The World Expo 2025, themed Designing Future Society For Our Lives, runs from April 13 to October 13 and aims to foster innovation and global cooperation toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Malawi’s participation through its National Day and cultural performances is part of a broader effort to deepen international goodwill and showcase its unique cultural identity.

The troupe is expected back home on Saturday, 21 June 2025.
