NBS Bank hits K1tn market capitalisation mark on MSE
NBS Bank plc has reached a K1 trillion market capitalisation on the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE), becoming the fourth listed commercial bank to achieve the milestone.
In a statement yesterday, NBS Bank plc chief executive officer Kwanele Ngwenya said the accomplishment highlights the effectiveness of the bank’s strategy, the dedication of its team and the steadfast trust of its stakeholders.

He said: “A cornerstone of our success has been our strategic direction, growing higher. This vision has guided us through the transformation process, allowing us to aim for greater heights in financial performance, operational efficiency and customer impact.
“As growing higher concludes at the end of 2025, it is inspiring to see how far we have come under its guidance.”
Ngwenya said over the years, NBS Bank has financially evolved, with profit-after-tax rising by 58 percent to K7.05 billion in 2020, to K7.69 billion in 2021, before registering a further 146 percent increase in 2021.
In 2023, the bank’s profit surged 55 percent to K29.3 billion, with projections indicating a further 133 percent to K68.6 billion in the year ended December 2024.
“These achievements are not merely numbers on a balance sheet. They represent the realisation of a vision to create a financially resilient and forward-looking institution that delivers value to its stakeholders,” said Ngwenya.
Last week, National Bank of Malawi plc also saw its market capitalisation rise to K2 trillion, a development its chief executive officer Harold Jiya said reflects commitment and confidence in its medium-term growth strategy.
In August last year, FDH Bank plc became the third counter on the MSE to hit the K1 trillion mark after FMB Capital Holdings plc which owns First Capital Bank and Airtel Malawi plc.
On the other hand, in June last year, Standard Bank plc market capitalisation rose to K1.032 trillion.
MSE chief operating officer Kelline Kondowe is on record as having said the growth in market capitalisation signifies investors’ confidence in the listed counters, pertaining to their growth potential.
Market capitalisation refers to the value of a company that is traded on the stock market, calculated by multiplying the total number of shares by the present share price.
