A new local film, All We Have Is Us, produced and directed by renowned actor Ashukile Mwakisulu is in the pipeline.
With a projected K5 million budget, the movie will feature some of the known names in the local film industry such as Mwai Simbota, Hope Chisanu, Juliet Royo, musicians Saint and Mr Born Richie. The characters will loosely be based on the Choices TV series, another Mwakisulu production.
The script has been written by Mwakisulu and Priscilla Gondwa, a drama student at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi.
So far the casting is done and shooting locations have been identified, according to Mwakisulu.
The movie is about two teenage girls (Elsie and Dora), who were orphaned at an early age and were living with their aunt in the village. In their pursuit for a better life, they encounter different challenges which ultimately shaped their destiny.
Mwakisulu said in an interview: “Minus playing the lead role, I am also recording the theme song for the Movie called Naliyela with Saint. We will also be getting assistance in the production of the songs from guitarist JJ Munthali.”
He said they expected the production of the film to take them three weeks. At the moment the project is relying on funds from well-wishers.
Saint, who features in the film as Spider, said he is enjoying expounding another side of his artistic life.
“I know people know me as a musician, but this is an opportunity for me to show the people that I also have when it comes to acting. It is an exciting moment in my life as an artist,” he said.
