New system to boost border management
Malawi’s border management is set for a major upgrade with the rollout of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (Midas), designed to streamline data collection and enhance national security.
Developed by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (Satcp), the World Bank-funded Midas will improve the management of entry and exit formalities, visa and residency permits, asylum and refugee data, and migrant demographics.

Furthermore, the system will also integrate with international databases, including Interpol, thus bolstering national security and socio-economic development.
In an interview, Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services spokesperson Pasqually Zulu said the system will also reduce trade costs and processing time, promote value chain development, and improve infrastructure access.
“The new border management information system will significantly enhance data accuracy and connectivity between border points and international databases,” he said.
According to Zulu, Midas aligns with the Immigration migration governance goals under Agenda MW 2063.
Set for launch today, 15 May 2025, Midas will be implemented at Dedza, Mchinji, and Kamuzu International Airport before being rolled out to 16 border points across Malawi.
