NGO hailed for supporting people with down syndrome

Lilongwe Deputy Mayor Ruth Chingwalu has commended Sikhalo Foundation for championing advocacy and charity work to improve the welfare of people with down syndrome and autism.

She said this on Friday during the launch of the foundation in Lilongwe.

Chingwalu said the initiatives are important in bridging the gaps in support and services for people with special needs.

She thanked the foundation’s efforts, noting that people with down syndrome and autism face stigma, lack of awareness and inadequate resources.

“I am happy to see this initiative taking shape. There is still much to be done to ensure that people with special needs are fully integrated into society and organisations such as Sikhalo play a crucial role in making that happen,” said Chingwalu.

Sikhalo Foundation officer Henry Mtunga said the launch was a milestone in their efforts to support vulnerable communities.

He said the foundation aims to raise awareness about down syndrome and autism, offer direct support to families and advocate for policies that protect the rights of people with disabilities.

“We believe that every child and adult with down syndrome and autism deserves a chance to thrive.

Said Mtunga: “This is just the beginning and we are inviting more partners, stakeholders, and well-wishers to join hands with us in this journey.”

Representatives from various sectors, including government officials, non-governmental organisations, parents, social influencers and children with special needs attended the launch.
