He said this on Tuesday when he opened a week-long Sonder Project-sponsored students’ academic clinic at Chayamba Secondary School in the district.

Through its Water is Our Right initiative, the Sonder Project has installed solar-powered water systems at Chayamba and Kawiya secondary schools and is installing a third at Kasungu Secondary School.

Said Mthote: “In Kasungu, we have a huge water problem and for students to learn in an environment without water is horrific.

“This is why we laud the Sonder Project for assisting government with the supply of clean water in our schools. This is a huge contribution towards creating a safe and conducive environment that promotes teaching and learning.”

He also thanked the organisation for sponsoring needy students.

Said Mthote: “The need for bursaries is huge as many students drop out of school due to lack of school fees and other forms of support. Some even fail to report [for classes] after being selected to start Form One.

“We are pleased that the organisation is sponsoring 160 students.”

Sonder Project country director Beria Michembo said the organisation will continue to help schools, learners and communities through sustainable development initiatives to create an environment  where individuals have opportunities to lift themselves from poverty.

She said the academic clinic, which brought together the organisation’s sponsored students in 17 schools, will help to instil discipline and a spirit of hard work among the learners.

“This camp is about academics and life skills enrichment. We will also have sessions on mental health. After this, we expect good results from the students that we support,” she said
