The Assemblies of God Relief and Development Service (Agreds) is training primary school teachers in fighting the effects of climate change.

Speaking on Wednesday during a one-day training workshop for teachers from 10 schools in Salima, Agreds project officer Pearson Banda said teachers have a critical role to play in combating the problem in the country.

Banda said the organisation believes that empowering teachers will help in spreading messages on climate change to students and communities.

“Teachers can understand issues of climate change and its effects better. We are optimistic that our objective of disseminating messages on climate change will be achieved,” said Banda.

Salima district environmental officer Getrude Gangata said Salima has not been spared the negative effects of climate change, citing floods and changes in the weather pattern as some of the notable effects of the problem.

The Climate and Water Justice project is being implemented in Salima and Karonga with money from TearFund.
