Nice warns on defaulting national ID registration
National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has advised people of Zomba to register in the ongoing mass identity (ID) registration exercise which started yesterday in the district.
Nice Zomba civic education officer Albertina Nsongolo said this on Wednesday in the district during a meeting with area civic education coordinators (Acec), zone coordinators and para-civic educators from all the traditional authorities.
The meeting was aimed at empowering the participants to encourage communities to get registered.
Nsongolo said communities should appreciate that government cannot afford to be implementing desired developments when it has no records on the specific population of its citizens.
“There has been a public outcry on the quality of services being delivered by public service providers and we would like communities to appreciate that these national identification cards are meant to safeguard against poor services,” she said.
In his remarks, Acec for Zomba Alfred Mandalawe described the meeting as crucial in ensuring that more people get registered.
“We will put much effort in encouraging people to get registered to ensure that they get better services for being recognised as Malawians,” he said.
The mass ID registration, which began in the Central Region, is being carried out in phases. n
