Renowned Nigerian actors Charles Awurum, Charles Inojie and Nkeiruka Sylvanus have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Film Association of Malawi (Fama) to collaborate on a new movie production and support the growth of the local film industry.

The MoU, signed on Friday at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, will enable the Nigerian actors to contribute to Fama’s operations.

The partnership will also facilitate knowledge-sharing and capacity-building for Malawian filmmakers.

Awurum signs the MoU as Bushiri (L) and Kingston

It follows a K40 million partnership between Shepherd Bushiri Foundation (SBF) and Fama to foster industry growth and support Malawian and international actors.

Speaking after the signing, , one of the actors,  Charles Inojie , assured Fama of their commitment to work with local industry players.

“We are ready and committed to making this work. We will work together with Fama and local filmmakers to make this a success,” he said.

Inojie urged Fama’s leadership to take full advantage of the opportunity, emphasising that industry growth depends on serious and strategic efforts.

“It is not every day that you see an individual support an industry this way. The leadership of Fama and the industry in general must take this seriously. If Fama succeeds, Malawi will succeed,” he said.

The three visitors came following an invitation by SBF foundation who will also sponsor the movie that will feature actors from the two countries.

The foundation’s founder, Shepherd Bushiri, stressed on the importance of such partnerships in elevating the film industry.

“The presence of our guests from Nigeria is a testament to the potential for collaboration and mutual growth between our nations. Through this exchange, we can tap into their expertise and expose our local talent to new markets. I believe this partnership will help our industry reach new heights,” he said.

Fama president Dorothy Kingston said the association will maximise the collaboration to promote the industry.

“As an association, we are grateful for this opportunity and we want to assure our partners that we are ready to work with them,” she said.

Kingston added that the partnership will open doors for capacity building of industry players and open new markets for Malawian productions.

Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule pledged support.
