Nkhotakota receives K109m climate change funding
Nkhotakota District Council last week received about K109 million from UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) for the implementation of climate change adaptation intervention-related activities in the district.
Speaking during the presentation to the District Executive Committee, Local Project national coordinator Violet Mganga said the money was disbursed to districts which performed well in the management of Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) Projects.
She said: “This is a new project in Malawi, the mechanism will be implemented in Nkhotakota, Mulanje and Mwanza which are pilot districts and once we register successes and draw lessons, it will be extended to other districts.
“Today, we have shared what is supposed to be done with district members. Nkhotakota is one of the districts which have clean audits.”
Nkhotakota district commissioner Ben Tonho said he was pleased with the development.
He said the council wants to develop the district to “unimaginable level” and these funds are a stepping stone to those levels.
“As Nkhotakota District Council, we agreed that for us to be getting project fundings, we need to do well in Local Authority Performance Assessment and to have well-organised financial systems which will also give confidence to the donors,” said Tonho.
Through the Environmental Affairs Department and National Local Government Finance Committee, UNCDF provide $ 410 000 (about K30 million) during the pilot phase.
