He said: “The Cosafa Women’s Championship has no sponsor and the players were aware of that because even when they qualified for the 2021 edition final, they did not get any prize money.

“The only time the tournament was sponsored was in 2017 by Kwesi TV when it was hosted by Zimbabwe.”

Zakazaka said only the men’s senior tournament has a sponsor for prize money.

Nevertheless, FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said in an interview yesterday that the association was consulting on how best to reward the Scorchers.

Scorchers captain Temwa Chawinga, who won the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards, said they were aware that the tournament does not have prize money.

“For us it was about national pride and I believe we achieved that. As for the rewards , it will be up to the authorities, be it government, FAM or other stakeholders to see if they can do something,” she said.

Malawi won the tournament after beating Zambia 2-1 in the final on Suday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

It was the first time for the Scorchers to win the regional showpiece since its inception in 2002.
