No targets, timeframe for interim coaches
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says no targets have been set for the interim Flames coaching panel.
Last week, the association appointed FCB Nyasa Bullets mentor Kallisto Pasuwa as interim coach, with Silver Strikers’ Peter Mponda and Pritchard Mwansa of Moyale Barracks as his assistants following the termination of immediate-past coach Patrick Mabedi’s contract.
The caretaker panel’s first assignment is the upcoming 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cupof Nations qualifier against Burundi’s Swallows away in Ivory Coast on November 14 before hosting Burkina Faso’s Stallions at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe four days later.
Responding to a question on their expectations from the panel in an interview yesterday, FAM general secretary Alfred Gunda said: “There are no targets set as what is important for the team is to have a panel to guide the charges in the upcoming assisgnments.”
He also said there is no specific timeframe for the coaching panel.
“As it is stated, they are an interim technical panel. This will stand until substantive appointments are made,” said Gunda.
The Flames are expected to leave the country on Monday for Abijan and FAM is likely to announce the travelling squad within the week,
A statement from the association on termination of Mabedi’s contract, read: “This is in line with resolutions of the FAM Emergency Committee held on 28th October 2024.
“The decision is based on the recommendations from the technical committee following the dismal performance of the Flames and subsequent failure to qualify for the Total Energies Afcon 2025.”
Malawi anchor Group L with no point from four matches. Leaders Burkina Faso and second-placed Senegal are tied on 10 points, but are separated on goal difference while Burundi are third with three points earned from their 3-2 victory over the Fllames.
