Nomads ponder joining CAF tourney, speak on coach

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have hinted at joining the 2025/26 Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Confederation Cup after winning the Castel Challenge Cup.

The Nomads qualify to take part in the continental showpiece  by virtue of winning the biggest domestic national cup competition.

In an interview yesterday,  club president and board chairperson Thomson Mpinganjira said: “Now that we qualify, it is something that can be considered. Let’s wait and see.”

One of the club’s directors Tiya Somba-Banda was quoted by Zodiak Broadcasting Station yesterday as having said: “The intention is there now that we have earned the rights of joining the competition.

“We are seriously considering joining the competition. The president is aware and he will support the cause.”

Before the start of the season, Mpinganjira challenged the Nomads to prove that they deserved to join the current Caf Confederation Cup by performing well in the first two months of the season.

However, the team failed the test after a poor showing which saw them suffer back-to-back defeats against Silver Strikers and Mzuzu City Hammers by 2-0 margins, a development that led to the unceremonious departure of the then coach Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan.

Meanwhile,  Wanderers have said a decision on the future of caretaker coach Bob Mpinganjira and his backroom staff  will be made in due course.

On whether the coach has boosted his chances for a permanent role after winning the Castel Challenge Cup, Nomads chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said: “There is a whole lot of work that needs to be done to evaluate the season and how progress has been made.

“Indeed, everyone wants to associate with a champion. Bob has proved that he is a champion. Last year he won two trophies with the reserve side, this year one key trophy. Anything can happen.

“Bob is a good coach any team would want to associate with and wanderers is not any different based on the ambitions we have as a club.”
