Nomads report CEO assault to police

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have reported to police an assault on chief executive officer (CEO) Panganeni Ndovi on Saturday afternoon allegedly by a Nomads’ fan Cecil Malunga in Green Corner,  Blantyre.

In an interview yesterday, the Nomads boss confirmed the ordeal, saying his crime was to deny the alleged assailant free entry during a TNM Super League match at Kamuzu Stadium in October last year.

Ndovi: I feel better.

Confirming the incident, Ndovi said: “Yes I was indeed attacked. I am better now after being treated as an outpatient at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital.

“The issue started at the last Blantyre derby as he wanted to enter the stadium at half-time where I had refused him [free] entry and he took it personal and vowed to attack me at the first instance he would meet me.

“So, he bumped into me yesterday [Saturday] and indeed attacked me. The matter has been reported to the police.”

Wanderers board secretary and legal adviser Chancy Gondwe said the matter was first reported to Blantyre Police Station.

“Today [yesterday], the matter will be reported at  Manase Police as per the advice of Blantyre Police Station as the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Manase Police Unit,” he  said.

Blantyre Police spokesperson Peter Mchiza yesterday said he needed to find out from Manase Police Unit if the complaint had been lodged.

An eye witness told The Nation that in a mafia movie-like style, Ndovi was pushed out from his moving vehicle while in a fuel queue in full view of people.

“After pushing him out of his car, the assailant started beating the helpless Wanderers CEO, injuring his shoulder in the process,” said the source.

“When an opportunity arose, Panganeni sneaked out some 200 metres and started making calls for rescue.

“On the other hand, accompanied by a mob, the assailant started running after him while shouting wakubayo! [catch the thief], but Ndovi kept running and hid in an unfinished building where the rescue team found him. It was an embarrassing and unfortunate incident.”
