Atupele eyes victory in 2025 General Election

United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi says he is optimistic that his party will win the September 16 2025 General Election because UDF has policies that can resolve Malawi’s woes.

Speaking during a whistle-stop tour in Mangochi on Saturday, he said Malawians are reeling under multiple crises due to poor leadership.

Atupele, who served in various ministerial positions between 2012 and 2020, said UDF has a good track record and that he has never been arrested in connection with suspected corruption.

He said: “Don’t make another mistake of voting for political leaders who are thieves and corrupt if we are to get out of the current crisis. I am aware that things are now out of hand in this country.

“But I will fight for you because we are taking over this government, come September. Change must happen now.”

Atupele’s statement came three days after Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika, whom he partnered in the court-sanctioned fresh presidential election in 2020, hinted at a possible electoral alliance with some opposition political parties, including UDF.

But UDF regional governor for the eastern region Kennedy Kuntenga said UDF supporters want Atupele to be on the ballot in the election because they are tired of seeing him under other political party leaders.

UDF chairperson Lilian Patel noted that disputes during the party primary elections split UDF votes.

In this regard, she advised the party members to be united and elect candidates wanted by the majority during UDF primaries.

UDF and other opposition political parties including DPP, Alliance for Democracy (Aford) and UTM Party are on record as having conceded that it will not be easy for a single party to win the presidential race based on the 50+1 system.

Former UDF spokesperson Yusuf Mwawa told The Nation in July last year that any alliance will have to be formed out of convenience that will look at the larger picture of advancing the will of masses and not individuals.
