Mighty Mukuru Wanderers yesterday missed an opportunity to go top of the TNM Super League table when they were held to a one-all draw by Kamuzu Barracks (KB) at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The Nomads needed to win to move two places up and dislodge Chitipa United who have 39 points.

Wanderers remain third with 37 points from 20 matches, they are tied on points with second-placed FCB Nyasa Bullets, who have a better goal difference. The People’s Team also have two games in hand.

The Nomads found themselves trailing when the Lilongwe-based Malawi Defence Force outfit took the lead through Olson Kanjira in the 16th minute.

The goal came when Gregory Nachipo capitalised on a poor back pass from Peter Cholopi to set up  Kanjira who dribbled past goalkeeper William Thole before  slotting the ball home home.

The match ebbed and flowed with both teams enjoying possession for the rest of the first half.

The Lali Lubani Road outfit upped the tempo in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts when towering defender Lawrence Chaziya equalised in the 53rd minute after being set up by Wisdom Mpinganjira.

Wanderers coach Mark Harrison said they had a poor first half.

He said: “If we had played the way we did in the second half, we would have won comfortably. We gave away a silly goal and never looked like we had any intent to win the game.

“We created chances, but we couldn’t convert them. Obviously I am disappointed but it’s not the end of the world.”

His KB counterpart Alick Chirwa said: “We would have won the game, but we have been let down by the referees. Wanderers’ goal was not genuine.”

At Bingu National Stadium, in Lilongwe, Silver Strikers came from a goal down to thump Moyale Barracks of Mzuzu 4-1.

Despite the win, Silver remain fourth with 36 points from 20 matches.

The Lions of Kaning’ina stunned the Central Bankers with an early goal that came in the fifth minute through Gastin Simkonda who capitalised on a defensive error by Nickson Mwase.

Silver pulled level in the 32nd minute through a penalty awarded after Duncan Nyoni was fouled in the box and up stepped Innocent Shema to convert the spot-kick.

Patrick Macheso put Silver in the lead in the 40th minute before Chinsisi Maonga made it 3-1 just before half time.

Maonga claimed a brace and Silver’s fourth in the 77th minute.

In another match, Ekwendeni Hammers edged table-anchors Extreme FC 1-0 via Samuel Adeyimi’s 37th minute strike.
