National Registration Bureau (NRB) says it is expecting to register 30 971 first time applicants for national identity (IDs) cards in the ongoing mass community registration campaign in Rumphi District.

Rumphi district commissioner Emmanuel Bulukutu in an interview on Tuesday said the turnout is good and that he expected the exercise to meet set targets.

He said: “We have seen the youth who were not able to register last time coming to the centres to register.

“We have had few challenges, especially on death reporting. Few are coming to report. This is the area that needs more sensitisation.”

One applicant, Wysom Suweta, who came to renew his national ID, said he was optimistic he would get his card renewed.

“A national ID is a critical tool for our day to day transactions. For example, it is required in banks and to access farm inputs under the Affordable Inputs Programme,” he said.

Another applicant, Usher Nyirenda from Mlongoti Village, Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe, said she wanted to replace her damaged national ID.

“I want to take advantage of the outreach programme to replace my card because we struggle to access these services. Most importantly, I want to vote next year; hence, the need for a new ID,” she said.

Figures from NRB office in Rumphi show that about 7 543 new ID applicants had been registered by Sunday, April 21 2024.

The registration for national IDs and death certificates started on April 15 and is expected to conclude on April 29 this year.
