Inmates at Nsanje Prison were all smiles last week when St James CCAP Church of the Blantyre Synod donated K500 000 worth of assorted item.

Speaking during the hand over of the items, St James CCAP Church moderator the Reverend Henry Mtema said the gift was one way of improving prisoners’ welfare.

He thanked the church’s welfare committee for mobilising the items to fulfil its mandate of looking after the inmates and less privileged people in society.

“Every year, we make donations to people and this year we thought of alleviating the plight of prisoners at Nsanje Prison,” he said.

On his part, Nsanje Prison officer in-charge Risted Mabeti thanked the church for the timely support.

“The government tries as much as it can to fulfil its mandate, but there are also other emerging challenges. So, any support is much appreciated,” he said.

A prisoner, who did not want to be named, thanked St James CCAP Church for remembering them.

“We are blessed with this donation and we ask you to do the same to other prisoners and needy people,” he said.

The items included maize flour, beans, soya pieces, salt, plastic plates, sugar, plastic cups, buckets, and soap.

Nsanje Prison has 85 males and one female prisoners, according to Mabeti.
