Parties preach peace in Thyolo
Political party representatives in Thyolo District have agreed to preach peace ahead of the September 16 2025 General Elections.
In a bid to promote co-existence, on Tuesday the party leaders and their followers conducted a solidarity parade in some trading centres in the district.
The parade followed a peace pact that the leaders signed two weeks ago during a Multi-Party Liaison Committee meeting National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust facilitated.
Speaking after the parade at Thunga, Bvumbwe, Goliati, Mangunda and Luchenza, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) representative Moses Hamilton said they wanted to promote peace in the district.
“Our district has been a hotspot of political violence for many years. But now, with the intervention of Nice and other partners, we hope for a peaceful election,” he said.
Hamilton said the parade reminded leaders to foster love, unity and harmony ahead of the elections next year.
“We want peaceful campaign and election. We want our followers to wear their party clothes to other parties’ rallies without fear of being hacked,” he said.
His counterpart, Peter Kunje of Malawi Congress Party said they want the current peaceful environment to continue up to the voting day.
“We know development cannot take place when there is violence. This is the reason we are parading to ensure peace prevails before and after the elections,” he said.
Thyolo Police Station officer-in-charge Francis Chisoti described the political party leaders’ move as commendable.
“This is what we call a unified approach in ensuring peace,” he said.
Thyolo District Nice programmes officer Moses Kaunda expressed satisfaction with the initiative.
“We are excited to see political party leaders disseminating messages of peace. This is great,” he said.
Nice supported the parade with funding from Malawi Government under the Malawi 2063 Mindset Change.
